Shack fires left two dead and 22 people homeless

Shack fires in the City of Cape Town left two children dead and 22 people homeless on May Day.

The fires occurred in Delft, Phillipi, Kalk Bay and Gugulethu. The Disaster Management Centre has urged residents to be careful when handling fires this winter.

The City’s disaster response teams will assist the fire victims with the supply of food parcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing and building material during this morning.

The Centre’s Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said the origin of the remained unknown and the authorities were probing an investigation to the exact details cause of the occurrence of the blaze and preceding events.

Jahannes added that a docket has been open by the police services to investigate.
