The City of Cape Town is going to take tough actions against people who throw cigarettes butts from their vehicles. The full Council has recently approved the First Safety Amendment By-Law.

"The latest amendment stipulates that a person who throws a lit match or a cigarette, that is likely to cause a fire, from a the vehicle, shall be presumed," says spokesperson of Fire and Rescue Services Denzel Ramedies.

A lit cigarette left over is also known as a ‘stompie’. Allegedly, the devastating fire on Table Mountain in 2005 was caused by a tourist who tossed a ‘stompie’ out of his car window. The court case has still to be concluded.

Fire and Rescue Services hopes that wit this amendment people will think twice before they throw potentially flammable material from their cars. If residents witness someone throwing away a lit cigarette, they can call the 24 hour Emergency Control by dialling 021 424 77 15.
