The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) strike started today after a court ruling granted members the right to strike until Tuesday.
“The strike has gone ahead, we are at the head office of the municipality of Johannesburg where we want to demonstrate outside the premises of the employer,” says SAMWU spokesperson Dumisani Langa.
Langa says 5000 of their members gathered to walk the streets of Johannesburg.
“We demand that the municipality must try and remunerate the employees,” says Langa.
The strike will continue on Tuesday when the workers hand over a memorandum at the Johannesburg Civic Centre.
