The Red Cross reports that the death toll in Haiti could be between 40 and 50 thousand following the devastating seven magnitude earthquake that hit the island earlier this week.
Some three million people have been injured or left homeless.
Poor construction of buildings has apparently led to the deaths of thousands of people.
Rescue teams and supplies continue to arrive on the island with America also sending soldiers, aircraft carriers and amphibious ships to the area.
In South Africa, Non-Government Organisation Gift of the Givers is pitching in with relief efforts.
It has prepared an aid package of about five million rands. The NGO is putting together essentials such as canned foods, water purification tablets and high energy supplements.
Some 10-thousand blankets and 500 tents will also be sent to Haiti.
The Gift of Givers search and rescue team will take off shortly to assist the Caribbean nation.
