Deputy International Relations and Cooperation Minister Sue van der Merwe has confirmed that South Africa has deployed search teams to Haiti.
Teams, led by Rescue South Africa, left the Waterkloof Air Base in Pretoria last night.
South Africa will also be sending forensic pathologists to Haiti to help with the identification of bodies.
The third phase of the assistance will consist of humanitarian aid, in cooperation with the Gift of the Givers organisation.
Gift of Givers sent a team of 10 search and rescue specialists to Haiti last night.
They will be followed by a team of trauma specialists.
The team is carrying two-and-a-half-million-Rands worth of heavy rescue equipment in an effort to locate survivors in the rubble.
An estimated 300-thousand people have perished in Haiti’s earthquake tragedy, with many more injured and homeless.
