The Western Cape education department says a total of 7 116 candidates have registered for the National Senior Certificate supplementary examinations in February and March.
The department says Examinations will begin February the 11th with Computer Applications Technology Paper 1 and will end on March the 25th with Music Paper 2.
Departmental spokesperson Bronagh Casey says they developed revision sessions with grade twelve teachers to offer tutoring for subjects that need extra attention such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences.
Casey says they want all candidates to give these supplementary examinations their best shot, and urge them to prepare thoroughly.
"We believe that the revision sessions will help, but success will ultimately depend on how well candidates prepare for these exams,"Casey says.
She says the revision sessions will take place on weekday evenings from 16h00 to 19h00 and on Saturday mornings between 09h00 and 13h00.
Casey says the program will be offered at six venues, namely: COSAT, Khayelitsha; Rocklands Secondary School, Mitchells Plain; Rylands High School, Athlone; Isilimela High School, Langa; Fezeka High School, for candidates in Gugulethu and Nyanga; and Sea Point High School.
With regards to their turn-around strategy she says they have identified the subjects that deserve special attention and will provide subject specific support at all schools with passes below the provincial average.
“This, in turn, will help increase the pass rate, and bring us closer to our target of an 80% pass rate in 2010,” she concluded.
