Political parties have passed their condolences to the family of late Dr. Frederik van Zyl Slabbert.

This follows the news that Academic and former opposition leader died at his Johannesburg home.

The Democratic Alliance says van Zyl Slabbert was a truly great South African.

The party has described the deceased as a person who lived his life in devotion to improving his country.

“His leading role in opposing apartheid and facilitating South Africa’s transition to democracy is testimony to his enduring contribution to the country he loved,” says the statement.

Meanwhile, ID leader Patricia de Lille described the death of Van Zyl Slabbert as a “sad loss for our country of somebody who played an instrumental role in aiding South Africa’s transition process towards our new democracy”.
