Van Zyl Slabbert passes away at age 70

Former opposition leader and academic Frederick van Zyl Slabbert has died at the age of 70 years old at his Johannesburg residence.

Van Zyl Slabbert had been undergoing treatment for a serious liver condition at the Milpark Hospital.

The 70 year old served as the head of the Progressive Federal Party for seven years in the House of Assembly during the apartheid regime.

Van Zyl also held the position of chancellor of the University of Stellenbosch, but resigned last year due to the deterioration of his health.
