The South African Institute of Professional Accountants estimates that the country has a shortage of more than 20-thousand accountants.
Saipa says as a result, South Africa's economy is effectively handicapped.
The Institute is working to increase awareness in an effort to boost the number of accounting graduates. To this end, Saipa is involved in projects among high schools in Gauteng and Limpopo.
The awareness of viable career options is especially low among pupils in previously disadvantaged communities, particularly in rural areas.

How can there be shortage accountants when the country is in a recession? If SA has a shortage 20 000 accountants and the US and UK have an over supply of accountants due to their recession will those persons not flock SA? They dont so the shortage is due to some other factor i.e restricted access to the profession
