The City of Cape Town has launched a court bid to oppose the South African Roads Agency Limited in taking further steps to convert the N1 and the N2 highways into Cape Town to toll roads.
Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille spokesperson Solly Malatsi says the city brought the application in the public interest because it believes that millions of people and businesses would be affected financially.
“Sanral should have put the announcement of the toll road tender winner on hold until the intergovernmental dispute had been resolved.
“The city intends to instituting further legal proceedings to review and set aside those decisions on a number of grounds”, said Malatsi.
He added that the city has a long-standing policy against imposing tolls on roads within Cape Town because it believes that tolling is ineffective and sometime unfair in funding road upgrades.
