This week is National Diabetes Week. In South Africa about three-million people suffer from the condition.
Diabetes South Africa says the disease used to mostly affect people over 40, but more children are nowadays diagnosed with the more common Type Two diabetes.
Diabetic nurse specialist Razana Allie says parents they can help protect their kids against developing diabetes.
She says it is all about life style or adjustment and making sure that the children are eating correctly.
Allie adds that parents must also promote activities and if they see the symptoms they must consult a doctor.
