The Health Department has confirmed that South Africa aims to follow Australia's lead and compel tobacco companies to use plain packaging for their products.
Director for health promotion Vimla Moodley told members of a parliamentary committee that the department was already testing plain packaging.
Graphic depictions of the consequences of smoking, along with health warnings, are also being tested in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Moodley says they expect reports on the tests by December.
