Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille has joined the extensive search for the missing four-year-old Shaskia Michaels in Mitchells Plain.

Shaskia was last seen on Thursday morning outside her Freedom Park home.

De Lille has joined a human chain of volunteers, police and disaster management personnel.

They are searching bushes along the Swartklip Road near the Wolfgat Nature Reserve.

Earlier, the mayor also met with Shaskia's grandparents.

The girl's grandfather Gert Faroa said he was doing laundry when Shaskia disappeared.

De Lille said it is very sad that in the space of a year in the same street two children went missing.

“The City of Cape Town is offering an award of R50 000 to anybody that can come with information that can lead to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator involved in the disappearance of Shaskia,” added De Lille.

She also said that they hope that they will be able to work with the community to try and make the area safe for the other children still living in the area.
