MEC
of community safety Dan Plato said that he strongly urges citizens to be aware
that carrying any form of dangerous weapons is illegal and any person found
doing so is liable to a sentence of up to three years.
This follows the recent strike action in
the Western Cape . Plato said that
he was informed by members of the public that in some cases the people
participating in strike action have been handling items considered to be
dangerous weapons.
Spokesperson Greg Wagner explains that the
dangerous weapons ac, signed into law by President Jacob Zuma less than two months
ago, criminalises carrying dangerous weapons in public.
“A dangerous weapon according to the new
act is any object, other than a fire arm, capable of causing death or
inflicting serious bodily harm, if it were used for an unlawful purpose,” added
Wagner.
