On Monday a father and son appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates Court after being caught with more than 10 000 units of abalone.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries spokesperson Lionel Adendorf said Thembinkosi Mvimbi and his son Mxaolisi was arrested last Thursday.

He added that it was one of the biggest abalone busts in the past six months.

Adendorf said the two are due to appear back in court for their bail application on the 7th of August.

He said if they look at July, they have already exceeded 15 000 units of abalone that was confiscated thus far.

The department has said they remain concerned over the issue.
