A father and his son will appear in the Hermanus Magistrates this morning after they were arrested by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Thursday evening.

They were arrested for being in possession of 10 408 units of  abalone.

The two were caught at the Salmonsdam in Stanford where the Toyota Quantum that was used to transport the load was hidden amongst the bushes. The vehicle was confiscated.

Lionel Adendorf of the Department of  Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries says they are calling on all South Africans to work with the department and their law enforcement agencies to bring an end to the exploitation of abalone.
