A fire occurred last night in Marcus Garvey Informal Settlements, off Eisleben Road in Phillipi.

No injuries were reported.

The City dispatched fire engines and crews from the Gugulethu, Mitchell’s Plain and Ottery fire stations to bring the blaze under control.

Disaster Management Centre Spokesperson Wilfred Johannes Solomons said the fire was caused as a result of an occupant that left a pot on a stove unattended which resulted in the ignition of the shack and then it rapidly spread to the rest of the other dwellings.

Johannes Solomons adds that the people lost their personal belongings that were affected and disaster management teams sprang into action to assist the victims with the necessary disaster relief aid.

Johannes Solomons said the City Of Cape Town disaster management authority appeals to residents especially in informal settlements to exercise caution and not to leave open flames and electrical devices unattended when they leave the room.
