Women on Farms Project in the Western
Cape today said they welcome the new R105
minimum wage but it’s not enough.
Women on Farms said based on a study
R150 a day would only cover 61 percent of household nutritional requirements,
the new R105 minimum wage will only provide 42 percent of farmworkers food
needs, assuming there are two earners working for 12 months of the year.
Colette Solomon from Women on Farms
Project said the R105 was achieved through the worker’s protests and if they
not done so this would never have been achieved.
Solomon said they will be meeting
with various other organizations and unions to determine the way forward.
