Western Cape MEC of Social Development Albert Fritz said he is encouraged by the progress at the Opiate Substitution Programme.

The programme which is a year old has seen the first two intake cycles of clients responding positively to treatment.

The programme deals with drug addicts. MEC Fritz visited the centre on Wednesday in Mitchells Plain and heard that the second cycle of clients is currently undergoing treatment.

MEC Fritz said the feedback on that was very encouraging 84 patients were treated thus far in the pilot, but they have not marked a role of that pilot out to areas, especially in the Metro that were affected and that are affected by Opiate views.

“We will continue with other treatment where people come in for general treatment such as drugs and tik addiction,” Fritz added.
