Five out of the seven inmates who escaped at Groenpunt Correctional Centre in the Free State on Thursday morning have been rearrested.

Seven inmates escaped after breaking through an unbarred toilet window with a steel dustbin. One of the suspect was rearrested just hours after escaping on Thursday.

Correctional Services Logan Maistry said on behalf of the Department of Correctional Services we want to praise the officials of DCS, South African Police Service and all other enforcement agencies, who went beyond the call of duty to ensure the speedy arrest of these five inmates.

Logan said with this kind of dedication and commitment, we are confident that the remaining two inmates will also be arrested shortly.

“We are once again appealing to members of the public not to approach any of the remaining two inmates, should they encounter them they must report to the nearest police station” Maistry added.
