The department of correctional services is yet to confirm allegations that its commissioner was arrested for drunk driving in Alexandra in Gauteng last week.

Yesterday, DA MP James Selfe submitted parliamentary questions to the Ministers of Safety and Security and Correctional Services, asking for clarity on reports that the Commissioner of Correctional Services Linda Mti was arrested for drunk driving. Answers are expected in parliament in the next two to three weeks.

According to reports, Abe Mashile, a driver was on his way home from work in Alexandra, when a VW vehicle smashed into him from behind. The accident took place during peak-hour traffic. Mashile says that the driver of the other vehicle was so drunk that he could not stand up straight. He says that the drunken man revealed his identity to police when they arrived on the scene.

While a drunk-driving charge has been logged at the Sandringham police station, the name of the person involved has been omitted.

A weekend paper reported that Mti was given special treatment at the time of his arrest and he was not brought before a court in the period as stipulated by law. Selfe told Bush Radio that, should the identity of the drunk-driver be confirmed as Commissioner Mti, the opposition will call for his immediate resignation.
