The City’s metals and theft unit, also known as the Copperheads, arrested three alleged cable thieves yesterday.
City spokesperson Neil Arendse says during routine patrols, an officer spotted three men digging a trench in the Edith Stevens Wetlands.
The officer quickly reacted and requested assistance.
Members of the police’s flying squad assisted with apprehending and transporting the suspects.
“The suspects, aged between 20 and 29, are believed to be from the Sweet Home Farm area and were detained at the Philippi Police Station on charges of theft of copper cable.
“Seven metres of four core underground 11KV cable was found in their possession, along with various cable theft implements,” said Arendse.
