The City of Cape Town embarked on a waste minimization project in the first quarter of 2009 focusing on the collection and sale of waste paper and cardboard from municipal offices across the city.
“This waste recycling and minimization programme is a City initiative,” said Alderman Clive Justus, Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services.
The Think Twice Recycle Waste Paper Recycling Project is driven by the Solid Waste Management, where all City Departments committed themselves to waste minimization.
Justus say the project is structured around a three year tender, awarded to the Mondi Paper Group where Mondi buys waste paper from the city.
They then pay the City different rates for different kinds of paper that the City produces as waste.
“This project was formally launched on 5 May 2009 in the Civic Centre, Cape Town, by being piloted on four floors. A month later it was extended to the rest of the floors,” added Justus.
Since it began it has earned the city cash returns and created broad environmental awareness.
The City says it plans to expand the recycling project to include other waste streams, such as glass, plastics and cool drink cans.
