Residents are expected to protest outside the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates Court on Thursday morning following a murder linked to an alleged gender based violence case.
Denver Pitts, 38, was fatally stabbed in December 2024, at his in Tafelsig home allegedly by his girlfriend. Police confirmed to Bush Radio News that a 24-year-old female was arrested in connection with the murder and appeared in the Mitchell's Plain Magistrates' court.
‘’Mitchell's Plain police registered a murder case for
investigation following a stabbing incident on 22 December 2024, in Slangoli
Street in which a 38-year-old man was fatally stabbed. Police attended to a
complaint of a person who was stabbed and upon arrival at the hospital the
victim was pointed out by medical staff. We can confirm that a 24-year-old
female was arrested in connection with the murder and appeared in the
Mitchell's Plain Magistrates' court. Kindly forward your enquiry to the
spokesperson of the NPA for further comment,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg,
Western Cape police spokesperson.
Bush Radio News has reached out to the National Prosecuting
Authority (NPA) for comment, but to no avail.
The deceased’s sister, Michelle Essack, described the relationship
the family had with the accused as ‘strained’
‘’I never had any kind of a relationship with the accused.
Anyone who knew my brother was a very friendly person; he would always greet and
had a smile on his face. The accused didn’t have that type of personality. The very
first time my brother brought her home, we actually wanted to give her a chance
in getting to know her, but the personality she had. My late mother told my brother
that this was not the right girl for you. Despite my mother said, he continued
being in a relationship with her. I was never involved in that relationship, as
she was abusive to my brother. She stabbed him twice and he never went to the
police station to open a case. I remembered the second time he stabbed her, he
came to me and I instructed him to go to the day hospital to seek medical help,
and unfortunately the third time he passed on.’’
The suspect, who is known to Bush Radio News, is expected
to appear in court on Thursday to apply for bail. A petition was drawn up by
community activist, Natasha Gertse, in opposing her bail application.
‘’The online petition has more than 800 signatures. We also
busy with a hard copy as we are worried that the court dismisses the online
petition. We are protesting outside court in opposing bail. We appeal to the
community if you are available to join us in front of the Mitchell’s plain
Magistrates Court at the Town Centre.’’
Essack says she hopes bail gets denied
‘’The amount of signatures on the petition makes me
positive. It shows me that my brother was cared for by a lot of people in the
area. I hope the accused gets bail denied as she does not deserved to be with
her family. My brother’s two daughters will never see their father again. It
breaks my heart. The accused took their breadwinner away from them and we do
not have parents anymore. It is very heartsore for me, but I remain positive that
the accused will be denied bail.’’
