The Congress of SA Trade Unions has called on President Zuma to put his weight behind a global speculative financial transactions tax. Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven says the so-called Robin Hood tax could generate three-trillion-Rand a year.

This, according to Craven, can be put towards assisting the world’s estimated 210-million unemployed people.

Britain and the United States have already opposed the idea, but Craven says this should not deter President Zuma from supporting it at an upcoming G20 summit.

Craven says Zuma should join the coalition supporting the tax the governments of Africa, global crises, Brazil, France and Germany.
