The African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape is calling on the South African Social Security Agency to get their ducks in a row and deliver on their promises of not stopping pensioner’s social grants.

This is after thousands of pensioners were left without grant payments after administrative error.

ADCP Provincial Leader Ferlon Christians said that they are very concerned that people over the age of 75 is going hungry because of SASSA not going to re- register them at home.

“We saw that these people are suffering and they cannot make ends meet because of SASSA not being well prepared to do the re-identification,” added Christians.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance said they hope that this error was not a political ploy at senior citizen’s expense.

DA MP of Social Development Mike Waters said the DA will continue to fight and ensure that everyone who needs a social grant receives it.

Waters said that the Minister of social development should be held accountable for letting the Western Cape senior citizens down.

“Social grants are the soul source of income for thousands of elderly South Africans and the SASSA bureaucratic bungling has without a doubt left many struggling too survive,” said Waters.

He also added earlier this year SASSA reassured parliament and the public that the social grant would not be stopped until home visits had been completed however this promised has not been kept.

Furthermore Waters elaborates that the DA will submit parliamentary questions to determine the extent of the re-registration backlogs throughout the country.

“I will also write to the chairperson of the social development portfolio committee,” Waters added.
