DA: government must move to restore credibility in the mining sector

The Democratic Alliance said African National Congress Chairperson Baleka Mbete threatened to stop the issuing of a mining license to the company Goldfields unless she got a big share of the empowerment deal.

DA MP of Mineral Resources James Lorimer said unless government moves to restore credibility to its system of awarding mining rights, South Africa will not attract investment from credible investors.

“Now if that’s true I suspect it may amount to criminal conduct and at least I believe that it should be investigated,” added Lorimer.

Furthermore he added that this is part of a wider issue because in the past Mamphela Ramphele who use to be a chair of the company Goldfields has accused the department of mineral resources of forcing the company to select certain empowerment partners.
