The Food and Allied Workers Union said the owner of Leeuwrivier farm in Wellington in Cape Town has instituted an illegal lock-out against seven of his workers.

This is after seven workers refused to dispose of human waste.

Fawu and the farmer is also in dispute over wages because the same farmer is deducting more than 10% allowed in the sectoral determination.

Fawu media officer Dominique Swartz said the union demands decent toilets instead of the primitive pit latrines.

There are also other aspects like workers are not being paid the minimum wage of R105 a day and Fawu referred the matter to the CCMA and requested an intervention by the Department of Labour.
