Members of the Social Justice Coalition were on Wednesday arrested for protesting outside Mayor Patricia de Lille office.

SJC General Secretary Phumeza Mlungwana said the total refusal of Mayor Patricia de Lille to engage with the SJC led to the exceptional show of force.

Mayor de Lille in a statement said the protest by SJC was a publicity stunt and that the she had offered dates to SJC for a meeting in October.

Mlungwana said the SJC is willing to accept one of the dates that the Mayor has proposed, only if the Mayor agrees to our demands stipulating the process of the development of the policy and plan. If the Mayor does not accept our demands for the process and follow through on her original commitments, we will continue to protest her authoritarian leadership of the City of Cape Town.

SJC has vowed to continue with their protests until the Mayor or the City responds to their demands.
