The City of Cape Town’s Health
Directorate is on hand to help ensure a safe initiation season for both
traditional initiation schools and the young men performing their cultural rite
of passage this summer.
The initiation season
officially two weeks ago.
“We don’t want to meddle tradition but the vested interest insuring that
the initiation process is done in a manner that promotes the health and
wellbeing of the initiates”, said Mayoral Committee Member for Health
Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli
He also added, “There are far too many
young men whose journey ends in deaths in part of the country. Deaths which
ultimately should and could be avoided”.
“We also started increasing awareness and
promotion of medical men circumcision, but we are sensitive to the fact that
this is viewed differently from initiation, which is a right passage”, said
Siyabulela Mamkeli.
