The Western Cape Department of Health and Community Safety on Tuesday launched a safety pilot programme for paramedics.

The project would see Neighbourhood watch members stationed at ambulance dispatch centers where they could join an ambulance on a call-out.

The system would be tested out in Khayelitsha, Elsies River, Lavender Hill and Hanover Park.

Community Safety Spokesperson Greg Wagner said the project would be tested over a period of three months in those areas and if it becomes successful it will be spread to other areas as well.

Wagner further said the pilot project was implemented in the crime ridden areas, because on one of the incidents an EMS member was stabbed in Khayelitsha.
