Striking Anglo American Platinum mineworkers are now demanding pay of 16-thousand-rand a month.

Gaddafi Ndoda, who described himself as a member of a newly formed workers' committee, outlined their demands at a meeting at the Blesbok stadium in Rustenburg today.

Among the demands were a refreshment allowance of 30-rand a day, a daily transport allowance of 60-rand and a safety allowance of one-and-a-half-thousand-rand.

A full memorandum of demands was set to be delivered to mine management in Klipfontein today.

Amplats suspended operations yesterday out of concern for the safety of its employees.
