The Police Portfolio Committee on Thursday discussed the training of detectives and their work.

During a parliamentary discussion of detective services, senior police Managers admitted that a lack of training, a shortage of instructors and appropriate technology are hampering investigations.

The Institute for Security Studies’ Johan Burger was part of the discussions.

Burger said it is worrying that, in addition to being poorly trained, detectives are also overworked.

Burger further said a single detective handles about 100 dockets or investigations on average, instead of the more acceptable 60.

He added that the number of detectives needs to be increased, so they can get a chance to attend training courses.
