Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says improvements around statement-taking at police stations, including the use of sign language interpreters, are vital in securing harsher convictions of criminals.

Mthethwa said police stations use external-registered sign language interpreters when there is a need.

He further said that victims who report crimes should not be compromised through wrong interpretation and badly-written statements.

Ministry`s Spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said they intend to employ more people with disabilities as part of their training programme.
