The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the call by Minister of Human Settlements Tokyo Sexwale for an investigation into the corruption found by the Ministerial Sanitation Task Team.

Tokyo Sexwale said government’s failure to eradicate the bucket system can no longer be blamed on apartheid.

Sexwale was presenting the results of a sanitation task team he established a year ago.

He said uprisings like the one at Marikana would repeat themselves if people were not given proper sanitation and other services.

The investigation will include maladministration and financial irregularities that have affected sanitation delivery.

The Special Investigating Unit will do the investigation.

DA Shadow Minister of Human Settlements Stevens Mokgalapa said over a million South Africans in the rural areas have no access to sanitation.
