The Western Cape Department of Education on Monday said 15 schools in the province have taken up the initiative to introduce isiXhosa as a second additional language.

The initiative is mainly focused on grades 4 to 7.

Departmental Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said of these 15 schools about 10 have discontinued because they cannot accommodate the additional subject.

Attwell added that the Department of Basic Education plans to introduce African Languages as second additional language over 12 years starting with the lower grades in 2014.

Attwell also said they will attain civic plan clarity on the national plan at the next meeting of Education Minister’s on the 23rd June.
