Education Minister at loggerheads with Equal Education

Department of Basic Education’s Panyaza Lesufi said the re-draft of the norms and standards for school infrastructure will not be ready before December.

This is after the department was taken to court by Equal Education for not publishing the norms and standards for school infrastructure in June.

Lesufi said Equal Education is being unreasonable by taking the matter to court.

Minister Angie Motshekga has asked for a six month extension.

Lesufi said that Equal Education is saying that the Minister must sign and then say that from tomorrow, every school will have 25 learners in a classroom, every school will have electricity, every school will have water and a new building and they want the Minster to sign an agreement to that.

“Its something that is practically impossible, we have argued that we can be in a position to sign if we say every new school that is built, it must be built with a library, with a laboratory and with a computer lab and that is where we differ with ourselves and Equal Education,” said Lesufi.
