The Social Justice Coalition said the events over recent months have once again highlighted the struggles of hundreds of thousands of Capetonians and millions more nationally who do not have access to a clean, safe and dignified toilet.

SJC said it is unfortunate that Mayor Patricia de Lille is attacking them after she criticised them at press conference regarding the audit exercise conducted by SJC.

The organisation’s Phumeza Mlungwana said no historical understanding of the context held about the social audit.

“The social audit was held by the residents themselves, people who understand the context better than anyone else.

“The City was given an opportunity an opportunity to respond even at the social audit, so it was not a secret audit that anyone did not have the ability to comment on” Mlungwana added.

Mlungwana went on to say she will meet with the members to see how they feel about Mayor De Lille’s comments.
