Traffic Law Enforcement Operational Plan winter launched

The Western Cape Transport and Public Works Department has officially launched the provincial Traffic Law Enforcement Operational Plan for the winter period. This is part of the Western Cape department of Transport and Public Works’ efforts to ensure safe travel on the roads, as well as encourage increased compliance from all road users.

The Western Cape Transport and Public Works MEC, Donald Grant says the operation will commence from the 1st of June 2014 till 31st of August 2014, where the department will be partnering with SAPS and the Municipal Traffic Authorities, the NPA, SANRAL and the departments of Community Safety, Health, Agriculture and Education.

“Grant said: “The operational plan will consists of K78 roadblocks, vehicle check points, alcohol blitzes, and operations focusing on fatigue, speed, learner transport, public transport, and pedestrian safety. All these will amount to close to 900 operations over the three month period.”   

Meanwhile, Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa has identified fatigue as one of the main factors of fatal accidents in the Western Cape roads. Africa says their operations will mainly focus on fatigue during the wet winter period. Africa.
