Department of Correctional Services shocked over the death of eight officers

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services has sent its condolences to the eight Correctional Officers who passed away this morning.

The correctional services vehicle was involved in an accident with a bakkie and a truck on the N2 near Swellendam this morning.

It is believed that the truck collided with the bakkie which was pushed towards oncoming traffic where the officials were travelling.

Ministerial Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said Minister Masutha has sent condolences to the colleagues as well as the families of the 8 correctional officers who accidently died this morning on their way to work,

Mhaga He has also wished speedily recovery to the surviving officials and cautioned all motorists to be very considerate whilst using roads. 

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic accident in Swellendam this morning.

DA MP of Correctional Services James Selfe said the officials of the Department of Correctional services have fulfil an absolutely crucial role in the criminal justice system and very often those officials go above and beyond the call of duty in fulfilling their mandate.

"For those reasons, we would like to extend our sympathy to the department and to the families of everyone concerned," Selfe added.
