Nine security guards were arrested at the Newcastle taxi rank for contravening the Firearms Act.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said it is alleged that these security guards are looking after the taxi owners at Newcastle area and did not comply with the Firearms Act.

Zwane said the firearms confiscated from the security guards will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of crime in the province.

He also said that they were arrested and charged in terms of the Firearms Act.

“Meanwhile the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu Natal has established a task team that would investigate cases relating to the taxi related issues in Newcastle area. This comes after a taxi owner was shot and killed while he was at his house in eMadadeni outside Newcastle.” Zwane added.

Zwane concluded by saying that the Hawks together with the crime intelligence unit have been tasked to investigate all these cases relating to the murders of taxi owners.
