Poor waste management in Khaylitsha has led to a serious rodent problem.

The City of Cape Town is now rethinking its strategy, which has relied on rat poison traps.

This summer the City’s Health Directorate will transition to a live catch approach.

The new rodent control program will cost over R700, 000.

Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli said, “Khayelitsha is very densely populated and unfortunately education around effective waste management is still a challenge as there continues to be an abundant of food waste that rats can feed on.”
