Two men aged 25 and 37 appeared in the Grabouw Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with murder.
Police arrested the 55-year-old Peter Wheeler, on Saturday for being drunk in public. Wheeler was taken to the police station in Grabouw.
“It is alleged that inmates in the cell assaulted the deceased by kicking and beating him with the fist. He died in the cell due to his injuries,” says police spokesperson, Randall Stoffels.
“A criminal and internal police investigation is currently underway,” says Stoffels.
The case has been postponed until August 17, for further investigations.
