This morning the bodies of an elderly couple were found in their Swellendam home.

Police were alerted by the gardener who became suspicious when he noticed blood stains at the front door of the house.

The couple has been identified as Nicolaas and Elsie Els.

Captain Frederick van Wyk says when police gained entry into the house, they discovered the bodies of a 63 year old man laying on the lounge floor and the body of his 58 year old wife, laying on the bedroom floor.

"We suspect that they were killed with a blunt object. It is unclear how the suspect(s) gained entrance to the house and if anything was taken, at this stage," said van Wyk.

A murder case is being investigated.

Anyone who can assist the police with information regarding this incident can contact the Investigating officer, Inspector Marcus Drysdale on 0840412224 or the Swellendam police station on (028) 514 1090.
