Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) student body has criticised management on comments of seemingly stranded students.
The group of returning students were forced to sleep outside its Belville campus on Monday night as their residence was full. CPUT denied they were returning students.
"Residence applications and the allocation of campus
housing is a streamlined process. No walk ins are being processed or allowed at
this stage," said Lauren Kansley, CPUT spokesperson.
"CPUT houses 50% of its student body in university
housing and we always prioritise female first-year students. An acceptance to
study at the institution does not come with automatic acceptance for a
residence place," she added.
CPUT SRC says however the university's management is lying.
"It has come to light of the problems particularly in
Bellville Campus of the residence issues, that is nepotism and cronysim
happening there. The residential officers in the housing department are putting
there friends and relatives first for space of staying in residence, running
the department like a personal entity and inheritance," said Phakathi
Emihle, CPUT SRC.
"It has come to our attention that some students
travelled from home with a residence status of accepted, and when they got
here, the residence officer particularly of Bellville Campus, changed their
status unilaterally, to some other status prohibiting them to register for
campus and left to sleep in corridors. The friends of the placement officers
are put in-front of other students irregardless of the plight of other students
who applied long ago in 2024 before them. There is a lot of issues, and we have
ensued on a subtle investigation and will addressed this matters soon with fear
or favor to the residence officer," he added.
