A new survey done by consumer Insight Company Pondering Panda has revealed that some township residents resent foreigners who run spaza shops.
Just over 5 000 people were interviewed.
About 50% were against the shops while 40% said foreigners should be allowed to stay.
Pondering Panda’s CEO Butch Rice says two areas were identified as very negative about foreign owned shops.
He added that they also had regional differences.
The Western Cape and the North West was found as being the most negative about foreigners and spaza shops.
Rice said he finds the figure quite alarming and in the last couple of days four spaza shops were burnt close to Cape Town.
He added that they are sitting on very real evidence and based on the numbers he expects the violence to continue.
