The South African Institute of Charted Accountants says there has been a significant drop in South African university students studying charted accounting this year.
The institute’s Chantyl Mulder says one problem is that there are not enough black and coloured learners taking matric maths.
She says another challenge is a lack of quality accounting teachers at schools.
She further states that they need to start changing the perception among learners and introduce them to the subject much earlier.
