More than half-a-million rand has been stolen from two safes at a military base in Potchefstroom, North West.
A newspaper reports that the thieves apparently got through the fence of the army's general support base and broke into the pay office through the ceiling.
They used angle-grinders to get into the safes.
The alarm system has reportedly been out of order for some time. The pay office is 30-metres from the office of the military police which should be manned 24-hours a day.
