Government must act on mine unrest

President Jacob Zuma says government will act soon to stop the unacceptable unrest that has hit the platinum and gold mining sectors.

An illegal strike started at Lonmin’s Marikana mine five weeks ago today.

Forty-five people have died in the subsequent unrest.

Without mentioning Julius Malema by name, Zuma added in Parliament yesterday that government was looking into what he described as “the actions of people of some description” who have been instigating miners.

Malema had earlier this week called on mine workers to engage in a mass national strike.
