The Congress of South African Trade Union in the Western Cape has opposed Metrorail’s fare increase.

Cosatu Provincial Secretary Tony Ehrenreich said the increases were effectively above the inflation rate; therefore negotiations between Cosatu and Metrorail are underway.

Cosatu has warned that if the negotiations fail the union will embark on a strike against the high increases.

Ehrenreich added this is an increase that undoes the generational disadvantage of apartheid that is being promoted and maintained by the Democratic Alliance, and is the first of its kind for the Western Cape.
